Doosan Group (Chairman Jeongwon Park) announced on May 1 that it signed a cooperative agreement with the Central Fire Service of the Ministry of Public Safety and Security (Commissioner Song-rae Jo) and the Korea National Council on Social Welfare (Chairperson Sang-Mok Seo) to provide funding for the “Healthy Minds for Families of Firefighters” program. The financial assistance will provide support for child nurturing and mental health treatment to families of firefighters who have been killed in the line of duty or forced to retire due to serious injuries. Those with young children who meet the upper age limit for school entrance are eligible to apply for the program. After a screening process, the selected families will receive up to 4 million won (about $3,500) per child annually in nurturing assistance until the child reaches school age. The program will also provide support for mental health checkups for children and primary caregivers, and professional treatment for up to one year, if necessary. As most of the existing firefighter family support programs are concentrated on providing scholarships to school-age children, Doosan Group launched the new program to help families with younger children, an age group that is often overlooked.
