Doosan Fuel Cell Begins First-Ever Export of Core SOFC Components, Entering Global Stack Foundry Market
      2026-08-05
-Successfully manufactured SOFC systems using domestic technology, paving the way for stack exports to Europe and further expansion of its SOFC business.
-Approximately KRW 108.7 billion contract, deliveries will continue through the second half of 2027.

Doosan Fuel Cell has successfully mass-produced stacks, a core component of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), using its own technology and supplied the stacks at scale to the European market. Last year, Doosan Fuel Cell became the first company in South Korea to successfully localize and mass-produce SOFC systems. This export marks the company's entry into the global stack foundry business, which it has been pursuing as a new business area.

On August 5, Doosan Fuel Cell announced that it has signed an SOFC Stack supply contract worth approximately KRW 108.7 billion with Reverion GmbH, a leading German energy company. This represents the largest overseas export contract in Doosan Fuel Cell's history and accounts for 23.9% of its consolidated revenue as of the end of 2025. Reverion previously installed Doosan Fuel Cell's SOFC stack and completed its own performance verification.

The stacks will be supplied in phases through the second half of 2027. Reverion's next-generation fuel cell systems equipped with Doosan Fuel Cell's SOFC stacks will be supplied to eco-friendly power generation facilities in Germany and other European markets.

Reverion specializes in reversible power generation systems that generate electricity from gas and can switch into electrolysis mode when surplus electricity becomes available. Rather than releasing CO₂ generated during power generation into the atmosphere, the company reduces carbon emissions by capturing CO₂ at a high purity level. Reverion's advanced technology has enabled its system to achieve a fuel-to-electricity conversion efficiency of 74% last year, far exceeding the typical SOFC efficiency of 60%.

Doosan Fuel Cell developed its mid-to-low temperature SOFC stack through technological cooperation with UK-based Ceres Power. The stacks operate at a mid-to-low temperature of approximately 620°C, lower than the high temperature of around 800°C for conventional SOFCs. This enables high power efficiency, durability, and operational stability. The lower temperature can also widen the choice of materials used in the system and extend component life, further enhancing Doosan Fuel Cell's competitiveness.

Stephan Herrmann, CEO of Reverion, said, “Mid-to-low temperature SOFC technology is key to high-efficiency fuel cell systems that have already entered the mass-production stage, with its feasibility already demonstrated across various sites. We expect the installation of high-efficiency on-site power generation systems to accelerate across the European market in the future.”

“This SOFC stack export is highly meaningful in that the core component foundry business has led to tangible results in the overseas markets,” said Jaedong Yoon, Executive Vice President of Doosan Fuel Cell. “Building on this export success, we will step up our efforts to secure customers globally, including North America and Europe.”

Doosan Fuel Cell said it is discussing further SOFC stack sales with potential customers in South Korea and overseas. The company expects exports to expand gradually over the medium to long term.
