      Doosan Fuel Cell to Pursue “Energy Efficiency Maximization Project Utilizing Clean Heat Sources” with LG Electronics

      Doosan Fuel Cell plans to develop a new business model that leverages waste heat produced by hydrogen fuel cells.

      Doosan Fuel Cell announced that on the 9th, it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with LG Electronics at LG Science Park in Magok, Seoul, to promote an “Energy Efficiency Maximization Project Utilizing Clean Heat Sources for Carbon Neutrality.”

      Under the MOU, Doosan Fuel Cell will be responsible for supplying and optimizing hydrogen fuel cell primary equipment capable of producing both electricity and heat. LG Electronics will establish an integrated energy convergence system by utilizing heat pumps, absorption chillers, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems linked to hydrogen fuel cells. The two companies will also jointly support key aspects necessary for project execution, including technology, policy, and business development.

      By applying LG Electronics’ energy convergence system to hydrogen fuel cells that simultaneously generate electricity and heat, the range of heat utilization can be expanded and otherwise discarded waste heat can be effectively used, thereby improving overall energy efficiency. Specifically, waste heat generated from hydrogen fuel cells can be used for heating or hot water supply depending on customer needs, and can also be utilized for cooling and refrigeration through heat pumps and absorption chillers.

      The two companies plan to expand deployment of this business model to customers requiring electricity and heating/cooling, such as industrial complexes, data centers, and large commercial facilities. The model can be easily installed near sites where expanding transmission and distribution networks is challenging. As it enables environmentally friendly and stable energy supply, it is expected to see strong demand as a distributed energy resource, which has recently been gaining increasing attention.

      An insider from Doosan Fuel Cell stated, “Through this MOU, we will develop a new business model that combines Doosan Fuel Cell’s hydrogen fuel cell technology with LG Electronics’ world-class HVAC solutions. We aim not only to contribute to carbon neutrality but also to expand order opportunities in the distributed energy market.”
