Doosan Fuel Cell has joined forces with domestic companies to address power supply challenges amid growing AI and data center demand.

On November 10th, Doosan Fuel Cell signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at Doosan tower in Dongdaemun-gu Seoul with Korea Hydrogen Fuel Cell Industry Association (KHFCIA), Korea Data Center Council (KDCC), SK Ecoplant, Hyosung Heavy Industries to promote “power solution business for data centers.”

Under the MOU, Doosan Fuel Cell and SK Ecoplant will manage and operate hydrogen fuel cells and gas engines, as well as implement systems that leverage waste heat from hydrogen fuel cells to lower cooling loads in data centers. Hyosung Heavy Industries will handle supplying and operating gas engines, along with EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction), KHFCIA will support policies and regulatory improvements to facilitate the introduction of power supply solutions, while KDCC will provide policy support to enhance power supply environments for the data center industry.

The power supply solution for data centers is a low-carbon electricity model that employs hydrogen fuel cells for base load and gas engines for load-following* power. It can be installed even in areas with limited room for grid expansion, and delivers stable output through grid-forming inverters**.
*Load following can adjust its power output as demand for electricity fluctuates.
**Grid-forming inverter actively regulates the voltage and frequency to stabilize the grid in situations where there is limited or unreliable access to the main power grid.

In addition, the heat produced by fuel cells can also be used for data center colling when paired with absorption chillers, heat pumps, and other thermal equipment. As a result, the solution can substantially cut the cost and time for building grid, support self-sufficient power system for data centers and offer greater flexibility in site selection.
