Doosan Group is ramping up its moves to explore innovation strategies tailored to the "AI era" and to hold a competitive edge in the industry. The Group's executives traveled to Silicon Valley, tasked with driving AX (AI transformation) across all business processes, from manufacturing to office affairs, and generating results through this transformation.
On the 23rd, Doosan Group announced that Vice Chairman Park Gee-won and other executives are visiting Seattle and Silicon Valley from the 22nd to the 25th (local time) to visit leading companies in the global AI industry, including Amazon, NVIDIA, and Perplexity. The CEOs of major affiliates are joining as well, including Doosan Enerbility Vice Chairman Jung Yeon-in, Doosan Corporation President Yoo Seung-woo, and Doosan Robotics Vice President Kim Min-pyo. The CSOs of each affiliate, including Chief Strategy Officer Kim Do-won of the Holdings Division, are also accompanying the Doosan executives.
During this trip, Doosan executives are making visits to the head offices of big tech companies like Amazon and NVIDIA to directly delve into AI technology and meet with relevant stakeholders. There, meetings are set to take place with researchers at Stanford University's AI research institute, Stanford HAI (Human-centered AI), to gain insights into the application of AI technology and brainstorm on AI innovation with consulting experts from McKinsey and BCG. They will also meet with startups paving the way in physical and agentic AI, such as Perplexity and Physical Intelligence.
Accompanied by senior executives from major affiliates, this trip is aimed at devising an AI innovation roadmap with the goal of securing a competitive edge in the AI era. The executives firmly believe that acquiring a competitive edge in the AI era requires innovation across all domains, including recruitment of AI experts, adoption of an AI-friendly organizational culture, and advancements in AI-based work processes, apart from adoption and utilization of the latest technologies. Vice Chairman Park Gee-won of the Doosan Group underscored to fellow executives, "We must integrate AI into all applicable areas to stay ahead of the competition. Time is of the essence."
On the 22nd, Vice Chairman Park and fellow executives began their itinerary with a visit to Amazon headquarters in Seattle. Amazon operates “Alexa”, an AI-based voice assistant, and has deeply embedded AI into diverse areas, including customer pattern analysis, warehouse operations, and robotics automation. Also, the company has made robust investments in AI, launching AI tools for developers and businesses in its Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing division.
After delving into Amazon's AI-enabled manufacturing and office productivity improvement projects, Doosan executives visited a logistics center to observe the AI and robotics technologies implemented in the field and explored potential collaboration opportunities. By leveraging this, they plan to deduce the challenges and opportunities for AI innovation and productivity enhancement across all business domains, not solely manufacturing.
After this, the executives will visit NVIDIA, a leader in the AI ecosystem with its cutting-edge GPU technology, to delve into the current technological state and use cases as to agentic AI and physical AI. Active discussions and collaborations will be undertaken on the vision and future strategies for physical AI across each business division.
Doosan is setting its sights on industry-specific physical AI, particularly energy and construction equipment. Physical AI refers to AI with human-level decision-making capabilities applied to real-world hardware, such as machines and robots, enabling them to perceive situations, make judgments, and take autonomous action in diverse work environments. The executives' visit to NVIDIA and future collaboration will serve as an opportunity to accelerate this technology even further.
Then, the Doosan executives will meet with Professor Choi Yejin and other key researchers at Stanford HAI, with which Doosan has an industry-academia partnership, to gain in-depth insights into the current state of AI technology. In recognition of her influence in the field, Professor Choi has been recently named to TIME magazine’s "100 Most Influential People in AI" list for 2025, following his selection in 2023.
As one of the world's top-tier universities in AI, Stanford University established HAI in 2019 with the goal of "improving human lives through AI." In April, Doosan became the first global industrial materials company to establish an industry-academia partnership with HAI. At this meeting, Doosan executives will share insights on the future direction of AI technology applicable to fields like robotics and traditional manufacturing, and view HAI's ongoing research results related to Doosan's business pursuits.
Along with this, they will meet with startups like Physical Intelligence and Perplexity, as well as expert groups in various AI-related fields, such as physical AI, manufacturing, office affairs, investment, and human resources, to discuss collaboration and build a network for rapid decision-making.
This four-day business trip to the U.S. is packed with a tight schedule, with only leisure allotted time for meals. A company official stated, "Doosan has been strengthening its AI-related organizations and providing intensive AI training to executives. Each affiliate's executives will take full advantage of this trip to accelerate AI innovation even further and explore diverse opportunities to enhance the tangible competitiveness of their respective businesses."
