Doosan Enerbility to Build 14MW Wind Turbine Nacelle Facility in Changwon
      2025-03-12
      - Early Works Agreement signed with Siemens Gamesa in Changwon on March 11th
      - New wind turbine facility to be built to effectively prepare for new business opportunities secured last year
      - Siemens Gamesa to provide technical support and training on offshore wind turbine manufacturing

Doosan Enerbility will soon set out to build a nacelle assembly facility for Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy’s 14MW offshore wind turbines.

Doosan Enerbility announced on March 12th that it had signed an Early Works Agreement (EWA) with Siemens Gamesa the prior day on building a new wind turbine manufacturing facility in Changwon.  In attendance at the EWA signing ceremony, which was held at Doosan Enerbility’s Changwon headquarters, were key figures from the related parties, including Yohan Yun, Senior Vice President of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Sales & Marketing; Kwangyol Lee, Senior Vice President of Doosan’s Power Services Engineering & Production and Falk Mehdorn, COO of Nacelles at Siemens Gamesa.

The two companies had initially entered into a strategic partnership in 2022 in an effort to expand the domestic offshore wind market in Korea. With the signing of this EWA, the two companies will now be embarking in earnest on the execution phase. Doosan Enerbility will start with the design work required for building the 14MW offshore wind turbine manufacturing facility and production system at Doosan’s Changwon plant.  Siemens Gamesa will be offering knowledge exchange on technology, manpower support and training to help Doosan Enerbility build up its nacelle assembly capabilities.

Siemens Gamesa, the wind turbine unit of Germany’s Siemens Energy, holds the No. 1 position in the global offshore wind turbine market with a track record of having supplied 28GW of wind turbines worldwide. Doosan Enerbility started engaging in the wind power business in 2005 and since then, has established itself as the leading offshore wind turbine supplier with the largest track record in Korea.

“With the signing of this EWA, we will now be able to take our partnership, which was forged based on mutual trust, one step further toward actual implementation,” said Seungwoo Sohn, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Business Group.  “Using the synergy created from our partnership, we aim to not only promote the domestic offshore wind ecosystem, but to also contribute to the expansion of carbon-free energy.”

Siemens Gamesa’s Falk Mehdorn remarked, “Our collaboration with Doosan Enerbility has played a significant role in securing a robust project pipeline for us in Korea.”  He added, “Doosan is a strong and reliable partner, one that is helping us enter the Korean offshore wind market effectively. We aim to exchange knowledge on technology and work closely with Doosan to effectively implement our 14MW wind turbines off the coast of Korea.”

Meanwhile, the competitive bidding for fixed-price wind power contracts conducted in the second half of last year resulted in the selection of five offshore wind projects and six onshore wind projects. Among the projects, Doosan Enerbility was selected as the preferred bidder for the 104MW Yawol Offshore Wind Farm, while Siemens Gamesa was selected as the preferred bidder for the Anma Offshore Wind 1 (224MW) and Anma Offshore Wind 2 (308MW) projects and the Bandibuli (Firefly) Floating Offshore Wind Farm (750MW) project.  Siemens Gamesa will be assembling and supplying the nacelles, a key component of offshore wind turbines, at Doosan’s Changwon plant for the projects.
