Doosan Enerbility and INC Sign MOU on Cooperation for Nuclear Exports Business
      2024-12-27
      - Industry-academia cooperation agreement signed to strengthen global nuclear non-proliferation efforts and expand nuclear exports
      - Development of supportive policies and environment pursued to facilitate entry into global markets for nuclear power plants and SMRs

Doosan Enerbility announced on December 27th that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with the International Nuclear Non-proliferation and Cooperation Center under the KEPCO International Nuclear Graduate School (KINGS) to cooperate on the expansion of nuclear exports. In attendance at the signing ceremony that day were the related parties, including Joo-ho Whang, Chairman of KINGS Board of Trustees (also CEO of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power); Chang-lak Kim, Acting President of KINGS; Yongsoo Hwang, Director of the International Nuclear Non-proliferation and Cooperation Center (INC) and Jongdoo Kim, CEO of Doosan Enerbility Nuclear Business Group.

With the signing of this MOU, the two parties agreed to cooperate on reinforcing the global nuclear non-proliferation efforts and expanding nuclear exports. To this end, cooperation is to be pursued in developing export policies and cultivating a supportive environment, such as bolstering nuclear partnerships with the U.S. in the area of nuclear security and strengthening the domestic supply chain. Furthermore, in response to the surging electricity demand arising from the AI data center boom, cooperation will also be sought in the areas of SMR technology development and supply chain establishment. Joint efforts will also be made in building a nuclear non-proliferation culture that promotes peaceful applications of nuclear energy.

The International Nuclear Non-proliferation and Cooperation Center (INC) was established by the KEPCO International Nuclear Graduate School (KINGS) in July 2024. It is currently engaged in various cooperation initiatives with the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), which are responsible for overseeing the international community’s nuclear non-proliferation efforts and nuclear export controls. The INC’s focus is on devising strategies for the overall nuclear exports process, with its coverage ranging from large nuclear power plants and small modular reactors (SMRs) to nuclear decommissioning and spent nuclear fuel management. It is currently building strategic partnerships with numerous institutions at home and abroad to establish a wide-ranging cooperative framework.

“This MOU will play a significant role in contributing to the international community’s nuclear non-proliferation efforts and in enhancing the competitiveness of our nuclear exports,” said Jongdoo Kim, CEO of Doosan Enerbility Nuclear Business Group. “We plan to continuously engage in collaboration with the INC and seek to further solidify the position held by the Korean nuclear industry in the global nuclear energy market.”
