Doosan Enerbility Chairman Receives Energy Award from Korean Resource Economics Association
      2024-12-15
      - Recognition given for leading efforts for securing Korean homegrown products in areas of large nuclear power plants, gas turbines and offshore wind turbines
      - Chairman Park pledges to “continuously contribute to promoting Korea’s carbon-free energy industry”

Doosan Enerbility Chairman and CEO Geewon Park recently received the Energy Industry Award at the “Korean Resource Economics Association Academic Awards Ceremony 2024” which was held at the Lotte Hotel Seoul on December 13th.

According to sources from Doosan Enerbility on December 15th, Doosan Enerbility Chairman and CEO Geewon Park was selected as the award recipient in recognition of his efforts over the past 24 years in leading the company to spearhead the local manufacturing of large nuclear power plant components and development of Korea’s homegrown gas turbine and offshore wind turbine.

In 2013, Doosan Enerbility had embarked on a collaboration project with some 340 partners in the local industry, academia and research sectors on developing a large-scale gas turbine for power plants. Doosan had invested a sum of KRW 1 trillion in the project and engaged in the related technology development, which led to Doosan becoming the fifth company in the world to succeed in developing a gas turbine in 2019. The first delivery of the gas turbine was made to the Gimpo Combined Heat & Power Plant for deployment, with commercial operation being successfully initiated last year. An increasingly large number of new orders has been successively coming in since then. Doosan aims to step up its efforts in promoting its gas turbines in the domestic market as it seeks to achieve an order intake of KRW 7 trillion or more over the next five years. The company is also engaged in developing an ultra-large, 100% hydrogen-fueled turbine by 2027.

By leveraging its expertise as a nuclear components manufacturer which was steadily built up over the years since the 1980s, Doosan Enerbility has succeeded in locally manufacturing the main components for the Korean-standard APR1400 reactor, and now has a track record of having supplied 34 reactors and 124 steam generators to date for nuclear power plants in Korea, as well as the global markets including the U.S., Canada, the UAE, China and Taiwan. Doosan is currently engaged in partnerships with numerous global SMR developers and is endeavoring to promote the exports of its SMR components in the global market.

Doosan Enerbility, which has the track record of having built Korea’s first offshore wind farm, the Jeju Tamra Offshore Wind Farm, is working with other Korean local partners in the wind sector to enhance the competitiveness of Korea’s offshore wind turbines. Doosan had been selected this past September as the lead contractor for the state-led project, “National Technology Development for Reducing Supply Chain Costs of Korean Ultra-Large Wind Turbine.” As such, Doosan is planning to invest over KRW 50 billion into the related research & development work and increased construction of manufacturing shops.

“I regard this award as being a joint award being given to our company and our partners in the industry, academia and research sectors, who worked together with us to contribute to the growth of the Korean domestic power sector by realizing the local manufacturing and supply of power plant components,” said Doosan Enerbility Chairman Geewon Park in his acceptance speech. “We will continue to do our best to contribute to the growth of Korea’s carbon-free energy industry and local economy.”

The Korean Resource Economics Association was established in 1987 for the purpose of conducting and promoting research of natural resources, energy and environment-related economic theories, policies, management mechanisms, technologies and industries. Since 2003, the association has been granting the Energy Industry Award on an annual basis to those recognized as having contributed significantly to the growth of Korea’s energy sector.
