Doosan Enerbility Holds Hydrogen Turbine R&D Symposium in the States
      2024-10-20
      - U.S. governmental institutions, local companies and universities invited to hear about Doosan’s hydrogen turbine technology
      - Presentations given on the progress of the hydrogen turbine combustor development, a state-led project being jointly pursued with local universities

Doosan Enerbility announced on October 20th that it had hosted the “International Gas/H2 Turbine R&D Symposium” in the States to promote the hydrogen turbine technology.

The symposium was held to share the outcome of the hydrogen turbine project being jointly pursued by Doosan Enerbility with some top U.S. universities and to strengthen the R&D network within the States for hydrogen turbines. The event attracted close to fifty people from the U.S. industry, academia and research sectors, as well as from governmental bodies, such as the Department of Energy (DOE), Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and Southwest Research Institute (SwRI). From Korea, five public sector power companies* as well as those from the private sector, were in attendance.
      * Korea Southern Power (KOSPO), Korea South-East Power.(KOEN), Korea East-West Power (EWP), Korea Western Power(KOWEPO), Korea Midland Power (KOMIPO).

At the two-day symposium which was held starting on October 16th (local time) at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Doosan Enerbility shared the progress of its gas turbine and hydrogen turbine development work, as well as that of the hydrogen turbine combustor nozzle, which is currently being developed via collaboration with major U.S. universities. Doosan Enerbility’s U.S.-based subsidiary, Doosan Turbomachinery Services (DTS), also gave a presentation introducing case examples of regenerative maintenance work performed on hydrogen co-firing combustors and hot parts of F-class gas turbines (gas turbine model with an inlet temperature in the range of approx. 1300~1400℃).

Doosan Enerbility had formed a consortium with three top U.S. universities** and is currently pursuing a national project aimed at the “Development of Next Generation Hydrogen Turbine Combustor Design & Testing Technologies.” This project is being pursued as part of the energy-related global research projects supported by the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP), which is under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and is slated to be carried out until September 2026.

”This symposium will be a great stepping stone to expanding our network in the States, particularly in the field of hydrogen turbine R&D, and for building a long-term collaboration framework” said Seungwoo Sohn, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Business Group. “We aim to continuously engage in R&D cooperation efforts to build up on our hydrogen turbine development capabilities and increase opportunities for more active participation in the U.S. market.”

After successfully accomplishing the local manufacturing of large-size gas turbines for power plants in 2019, Doosan Enerbility won the supplier agreement for the main components of the Boryeong New Combined Cycle Power Plant in 2023. The company now boasts of an order intake amounting to approximately KRW 1 trillion for combined cycle power plant components manufacturing and services. The company is currently working on the development of the world’s first 400MW ultra-large 100% hydrogen-fueled turbine, with the target date being set as 2027.
