Doosan Enerbility Bolsters Cooperation with Philippine Companies on Power Projects
      2024-10-08
      - Cooperation to be pursued with Meralco, Philippine’s largest electricity supplier, on building power infrastructure such as nuclear power plants, SMRs and gas turbines.
      - MOU signed with Quezon Power on delivery of EPC projects, including the supply of components for a 1,200MW combined cycle power plant

Doosan Enerbility is pursuing stronger cooperation with Philippine power companies to support expansion of the power infrastructure in the Philippines.

On October 7th (local time), Doosan Enerbility signed two memoranda of understanding(MOUs) on pursuing comprehensive cooperation with Philippine power companies at the “Philippines-Korea Business Forum,” which had been held in the capital city of Manila during the South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s state visit to the Philippines.

An agreement had been made with Meralco*, the Philippine’s largest electricity supplier, on stepping up collaboration in the area of the Philippines’ power infrastructure, mostly centering on nuclear power plants, small modular reactors (SMRs) and gas turbines. The MOU had been signed by Meralco Chairman & CEO Manuel Velez Pangilinan, Meralco Executive Vice President & COO Ronnie L. Aperocho, Doosan Enerbility Vice Chairman & COO Yeonin Jung and Doosan Enerbility Chief Marketing Officer Jungkwan Kim.
      * Meralco, which was founded in 1903, is currently Philippines largest private sector electric distribution utility company, accounting for approximately 55 percent of the country’s total electricity output and providing coverage for 39 cities and 72 municipalities in the Philippines.

An MOU was also signed with Quezon Power, a Philippine independent power producer, on pursuing a combined cycle power plant project in the Philippines. With this MOU, which had been signed by Frank Tiel, Quezon Power’s Managing Director, and Jungkwan Kim, Doosan Enerbility’s Chief Marketing Officer, the two companies agreed to collaborate on pursuing a 1,200MW natural gas-fueled combined cycle power plant project in the Quezon province, which includes a gas turbine that can later be converted to a hydrogen turbine. Quezon Power, will be responsible for the project development, including the sale of the electricity generated and the obtainment of regulatory approvals and permits, while Doosan Enerbility will be taking on the execution of the EPC work, including supply of the main components for the power plant.

”At this gathering where we have affirmed the strengthening of economic cooperation between our two countries, we have established a major milestone for boosting cooperation with major Philippine power companies,” said Vice Chairman Yeonin Jung of Doosan Enerbility. “We plan to further build up our competitiveness to become a trustworthy partner for the Philippine power sector.”

The Philippines uses the same frequency 60Hz as Korea, which makes it all the more convenient to pursue exports of Korean-standard gas turbines to the country. As such, Doosan Enerbility is strengthening its marketing efforts to expand its reach in the Philippine market. In June of last year, Meralco Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan and key members of his management team, had visited Doosan Enerbility’s Changwon headquarters to get a first-hand view of Doosan’s manufacturing capabilities. Last year Doosan Enerbility had been provided with the opportune chance to introduce its Korean-standard gas turbine and hydrogen turbine products to a group of potential customers in Manila, which included members from the Philippines’ Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Meralco and the infrastructure developer Aboitiz.
