On Nov. 15, Doosan Group Chairman Jeongwon Park visited Doosan Enerbility’s head office in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, and toured its nuclear, wind, and hydrogen business sites. He checked the preparation status of the nuclear power plants ahead of major nuclear power plant projects at home and abroad, and carefully inspected the main equipment production site for the 100MW Jeju Hallim Offshore Wind Power Plant and the construction site of the hydrogen liquefaction plant.

Having visited the nuclear power plant first, Chairman Park remarked on the recent movement of the global market and emphasized to the board of directors, including CEO Jung Yeon-in, “As the nuclear power plant projects are in sight, we must be fully prepared to produce perfect quality products at any time.”

The government is speeding up related procedures to resume the construction of Shin Hanul Units 3 and 4 as soon as possible. At the end of last month, the Republic of Korea and Poland signed a letter of intent between their respective companies and a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the governments to prepare a plan to develop a nuclear power plant in the Patnow region of Poland, paving the way for Korean nuclear power companies to export overseas once again. Moreover, Doosan Enerbility has shown rapid progress by signing an agreement with U.S.-based NuScale Power for the small modular reactor (SMR) business and testing a prototype of a nuclear reactor module.

Chairman Park also highlighted the concerted efforts to revitalize the nuclear power industry ecosystem, saying, “We are filled with pride at the growing interest in Korea’s nuclear power technology in many places overseas, and are doing our best to go beyond the customers’ expectations with good products.” He urged, “As close collaboration with capable partners is important to produce good products, let's actively seek out what we can do to revitalize the domestic nuclear power plant ecosystem and implement it.”

In June 2021, Doosan Enerbility announced the “five co-beneficial measures for nuclear power plant partners,” which are: work support, financial support, support for strengthening technological competitiveness, future growth engine support, and support for overseas expansion.

Only a few countries in the world can manufacture the main equipment for nuclear power plants, including Korea, France, Japan, Russia, and China. Doosan Enerbility is the only main equipment manufacturer in Korea and has supplied a total of 34 nuclear reactors and 124 steam generators domestically and internationally, along with its partners. The APR1400, a next-generation nuclear power plant developed by Korea, supplies core devices such as a nuclear reactor, steam generator, steam turbine, reactor coolant pump, and instrumentation and control system.

Chairman Park, who toured the large-scale nuclear power plant equipment production site, stayed for a while at the SMR workshop, which has recently gained attention and inspected its cutting-edge materials and manufacturing technology. In April, Doosan Enerbility signed an agreement with NuScale Power to start SMR production and produced a reactor module prototype for testing. Doosan Enerbility plans to start manufacturing cast and forged materials for SMR this year with NuScale Power by the end of this year and start manufacturing the product in the second half of 2023.

Chairman Park then visited the production site of 5.5 MW offshore wind power generators to be supplied to the 100MW Jeju Hallim Offshore Wind Power Plant and the construction site of a hydrogen liquefaction plant scheduled to be completed in April next year for the first time in Korea. Park said, “Let's proceed without a hitch so that the company's next-generation energy projects prepared for the future can contribute to the country's energy supply and demand.”

Chairman Park especially emphasized safety as he toured the sites on the day, adding, “Safety is the basic responsibility of both the company and our employees, so please put safety first before working.”
