Doosan launches next-generation hydrogen charging, utilization solutions at H2 MEET
      2022-08-31
      - Introduction of Tri-Gen, hydrogen fuel cells for power plants, buildings, houses, ships

Doosan announced on August 31 that it would participate in H2 MEET, the largest hydrogen industry exhibition in Korea, to be held at KINTEX, Goyang City, Gyeonggi Province, from August 31 to September 3, to present next-generation hydrogen charging and utilization solutions.

H2 MEET (Mobility + Energy + Environment + Technology) is where relevant companies from the hydrogen value chain, from hydrogen production to storage, transportation and utilization, assemble to introduce technologies and products and build professional networks.

At the exhibition, Doosan will introduce various hydrogen solutions currently being demonstrated and developed by Doosan Fuel Cell and Doosan Corporation’s Fuel Cell Power BU.

Doosan Fuel Cell is introducing its Tri-Gen and medium- and low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). Tri-Gen is a product that can generate three energy sources: hydrogen that can be utilized in hydrogen vehicle charging and manufacturing processes; electricity that can be utilized for electric vehicle charging and power sales; and heat supplied for district heating, hot water, and industrial heat sources. It won the Excellence Award in the Hydrogen Charging Infrastructure Category at the H2 Innovation Awards. It is currently being demonstrated at the KOGAS site in Hwaseong City, Gyeonggi Province, and Doosan Fuel Cell plans to complete the demonstration and launch a full-scale sales program in the third quarter of this year.

SOFC, which generally operates at temperatures above 800 degrees Celsius, is a fuel cell power generation system featuring higher power efficiency than other fuel cell types. Doosan Fuel Cell is developing products with high power efficiency and improved life expectancy while operating at 620 degrees Celsius, which is about 200 degrees lower than the previous model. The company plans to complete the technology development by 2023 and construct a 50 MW SOFC factory at Saemangeum Industrial Park in Gunsan City to establish a mass production system.

Moreover, the company is also developing maritime SOFC to comply with greenhouse gas emission regulations of ships. Maritime SOFC is expected to lead the innovation of basic ship design by offering higher power generation efficiency than conventional engines and a fuel cell module that can be integrated aboard ships.

Doosan’s Fuel Cell Power BU will exhibit hydrogen fuel cells for buildings and homes, including a 10 kW PEMFC (proton exchange membrane fuel cell) and a 10 kW SOFC. The 10 kW SOFC, developed last year, is a product with the world’s highest power generation efficiency, which is more than 40% higher than existing PEMFC products.

Moreover, the BU plans to increase visitors' understanding by installing 75%-scale models of actual hydrogen fuel cell products, an interactive touch wall that animates hydrogen fuel cells applicable to everyday life, and a touch wall containing overview information about hydrogen fuel cells.

A Doosan official said, “We well anticipate steady and stable growth in the hydrogen fuel cell market in the future with the formal pronouncement of the amendment to the Hydrogen Economy Promotion and Hydrogen Safety Management Act in June,” adding that, “We plan to use this exhibition as an opportunity to publicize Doosan’s hydrogen utilization capabilities.”

Doosan plans to continue pursuing new growth engines through the diversification of its business lines in the field of hydrogen utilization, such as the development of maritime fuel cells and early market preemption; the entry into land mobility businesses such as hydrogen buses; the development of ammonia fuel cells; and the development of CCS-linked fuel cells that capture and store carbon dioxide.
