Doosan Enerbility and Siemens Gamesa Join Hands in Fostering Korea’s Offshore Wind Power Business
      2022-06-26
      - MoU signed with Siemens Gamesa, the global leader of offshore wind turbines, for expansion of domestic wind power market
      - Revitalization of Korean offshore wind power ecosystem to be jointly pursued, such as supporting development of local parts suppliers

Doosan Enerbility announced on June 26th that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE), the world’s leading manufacturer of offshore wind turbines, on pursuing strategic cooperation for Korea’s offshore wind power market. In attendance at the signing ceremony held in Copenhagen, Denmark were key figures from both parties, including Marc Becker, CEO of the Siemens Gamesa Offshore Business Unit, and Seungwoo Sohn, Senior Vice President of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Sales & Marketing.

Siemens Gamesa, a subsidiary of the Germany-based Siemens Energy, is a leading global offshore wind turbine manufacturer that was formed in 2017 through the merger of Siemen’s wind power business with the Spanish wind energy company Gamesa. Having installed more than 19.4GW of offshore wind power capacity globally, Siemens Gamesa currently holds the number one position in the global offshore wind power market. The company owns an extensive product portfolio, ranging from the 6MW direct drive wind turbine to the 14MW wind turbine model, with large-scale investments continually being made for product development.

Doosan Enerbility, which first entered the wind power business in 2005, holds the largest track record in Korea in this field, one that includes references such as the Tamra Offshore Wind Farm (30MW), Korea’s first offshore wind farm, and the Southwest Offshore Wind Farm Phase 1 (60MW).  Last year Doosan had also clinched the supplier contract for the Jeju Hallim Offshore Wind Farm (100MW), Korea’s largest offshore wind farm to date. Doosan Enerbility is Korea’s leading wind power company, one that holds extensive capabilities that range from development of offshore wind power systems to the manufacturing, installation, construction of offshore wind turbines, long term maintenance services and wind farm development.

With the signing of this MoU, the two companies will be engaging in technology cooperation in various areas concerning ultra-large offshore wind power systems and its components, as well as the production, installation and operation & maintenance services. The two companies will also be collaborating on fostering the Korean offshore wind power ecosystem by jointly pursuing the discovery and development of local parts manufacturers and suppliers.

“We are delighted to start work with Doosan Enerbility in investigating a strategic cooperation in Korea. Leading the offshore revolution in the years to come requires strong partnerships, based on solid, mutual commitments. We envision an excellent alliance between our two companies, fostering the Korean offshore wind industry and contributing to its expansion,” said Marc Becker, CEO of the Siemens Gamesa Offshore Business Unit.

Hongook Park, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Business Group, remarked, "By combining SGRE’s global business-knows with our own technological capabilities accumulated over the years, we will be able to improve more rapidly our competitiveness in the offshore wind power business. The cooperation between the two companies will also contribute to revitalizing the offshore wind power ecosystem in Korea.”

Last year Doosan Enerbility had built its second wind turbine shop, one with the capacity to produce 5.5MW wind turbines, and restructured its organization to form a larger wind power organization. Doosan also developed a soon-to-be commercialized 8MW offshore wind turbine, which was optimized for Korea’s wind conditions. To enable mass production of this model, construction of another new wind turbine shop is currently being pursued. The company is making efforts to expand its offshore wind power business by engaging in various initiatives that include development of a next-generation ultra-large wind turbine model.
