Doosan Heavy Completes Construction of Jangheung Wind Farm in South Jeolla Province
      2021-11-04
      - 18MW wind farm built via cooperation with some 400 local companies
      - Competitiveness enhanced by developing wind turbine specially designed to meet Korea’s wind conditions

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, which holds the largest track record in Korea for the supply of offshore wind turbines, is experiencing smooth sailing in the wind power business. On November 4th, Doosan announced that it had held a ceremony to celebrate the construction of the Jangheung Wind Farm, a project that had been commissioned by Korea Western Power (KOWEPO). The ceremony, which had been held at the Jangheung Wind Farm complex during the afternoon hours of November 3rd, was attended by key figures from the related parties including Seong Gyun Kim, Executive Vice President of KOWEPO's Growth Business Division, and Jongwook Jin, Head of Doosan Heavy’s Wind Power Business Unit.

The Jangheung Wind Farm is a 18MW wind farm that was built in the Yuchi-myeon area of South Jeolla Province’s Jangheung County. In its role as EPC contractor, Doosan will be manufacturing and installing 6 units of 3MW wind turbines and will also be taking on any required supplementary construction work and the commissioning process. The company will also be signing a contract in the future to provide maintenance services for the wind farm.

Doosan’s wind turbine was developed using local technology via industry-academia-research institutes’ collaboration. It was designed to optimally meet the wind conditions of Korea, which is a typhoon-prone region that on average has lower wind speeds compared to Europe. The turbine blade was lengthened from 44 meters to 65.5 meters, allowing for the enlarged turbine blade to capture more of the wind, leading to greater power generating efficiency, while carbon fiber was used to make the blades lighter in weight and more durable.

“The Jangheung Wind Farm represents the results of our joints efforts with some 400 local Korean companies to promote the wind power industry. We would like to thank KOWEPO for their efforts in promoting the local manufacturing of wind turbines, and we plan to do our utmost to effectively develop wind power technology and enhance our production capabilities, so that we may be able to contribute to the global trend of achieving carbon neutrality,” said Hongook Park, CEO of Doosan Heavy’s Power Services Business Group.

Doosan Heavy had signed a supplier agreement this past April to provide the equipment for the Jeju Hallim Offshore Wind Farm, Korea’s largest offshore wind farm to date. The company has also finished construction of its second wind turbine shop at its Changwon headquarters and has been working to secure the required manpower to effectively prepare for the rise in domestic orders. Doosan currently has a product lineup consisting of 3MW and 5.5MW offshore wind turbine models, and is planning to commercially launch a 8MW model which is scheduled to be developed by next year.
