Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Wins Large ESS Contract in Australia
2020-12-15
- New partnership for 150MWh ESS construction, to be Queensland’s largest-to-date
- Marks entry into rapidly growing Australian ESS market, forecast to grow to 40GWh by 2030

Doosan GridTech, the US subsidiary of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, announced today that it had recently won a contract from the leading IPP and renewable energy developer Vena Energy for the delivery of the Wandoan South BESS (battery energy storage system) in Queensland, Australia; the largest-ever energy storage system (ESS) in Queensland to date. The Wandoan South BESS, which is Doosan’s largest ESS win to date, has an estimated value of 100 billion won.

Vena Energy is a leading Independent Power Producer (IPP) of renewable energy in the Asia-Pacific region, with over 11 gigawatts in operation, construction and development. Headquartered in Singapore, Vena Energy manages the development, design, procurement, construction and maintenance of its solar, wind and battery energy storage systems in Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

Taking on the project as an EPC contract, Doosan GridTech will be employing its own ESS software and system integration capabilities and applying this expertise to the overall process, which covers design, procurement of necessary equipment and materials, and construction work. The Wandoan South BESS is expected to be completed in mid-2021. The ESS will have the capacity to store 150MWh of energy, as an example this would be equivalent to powering approximately 23,000 average Korean homes.

The ESS applies the strengths of digital technology to green energy and it is being relied on nowadays to enable effective management of energy demand during peak hours and ensure stability of renewable energy sources.

Doosan’s very own storage control system, the Doosan GridTech-Intelligent Controller (DG-IC), will be used to operate the ESS, which is to be a peak-shaving system that is directly linked to Queensland’s power grid. The ESS will enable the leverage of excess solar generation in Queensland and provide capacity when other renewable power sources are not generating.

Yongjin Song, Doosan Heavy’s Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) remarked, “The recent project win has proven once again the competitiveness of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction’s ESS technology.” He added, “The company aims to use this project as a steppingstone to further expand our reach into the Australian ESS market, which is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years.”

According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), the world’s leading news provider for the energy sector, the Australian ESS market is forecast to grow (in cumulative capacity) from 1.9GWh in 2020 to 18.7GWh in 2025 and then, 40GWh by 2030, which would be an explosive growth of more than 20-folds over a span of 10 years.
