Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction to produce green hydrogen via Jeju wind
      2020-11-25
      - MoU signed with 10 companies including Jeju Energy Corporation to develop green hydrogen demonstration project
      - Wind power being used to produce hydrogen with zero-carbon emissions
      - Doosan wins KRW 500 billion worth of green energy contracts like hydrogen and hydropower projects last month

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is actively expanding its green energy business portfolio and is about to participate in a green hydrogen demonstration project on South Korea’s Jeju island. This will be Korea’s first wind power-based green hydrogen demonstration project that performs an entire life cycle assessment from hydrogen production to utilization.

Doosan announced on November 24th that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with ten companies*, including the Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Government, Korea Midland Power(KOMIPO), and Korea Gas Corporation(KOGAS), for the “Green Hydrogen Production, Storage and Utilization Demonstration Project,” a Jeju island project that is being hosted by Jeju Energy Corporation and supported by South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy(MOTIE) and Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning(KETEP). The companies will collaborate on the development and demonstration of the green hydrogen project, a zero-carbon emissions project assessing the entire life cycle from wind power-based hydrogen production to storage, transport and utilization.

The demonstration project will take place at Jeju Energy Corporation’s Dongbok and Bukchon wind farms. The project includes constructing a hydrogen production system that has the capacity of producing 600kg of hydrogen per day using 3MW of wind power, a hydrogen compression and storage system and a 2MWh battery system for storing unused energy.

Doosan will be designing the hydrogen plant including the hydrogen production, compression and storage systems, providing supervision, and developing the energy management system(EMS). About 20 billion won will be invested in the project, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2022. The hydrogen that is produced will be used as fuel for hydrogen buses operated on the Jeju island.

Hydrogen can be classified by how it is produced. It can be made as a by-product of a petrochemical processes, be extracted from the natural gas reforming process, or be generated through water electrolysis. Hydrogen produced using renewable energy like wind power is referred to as “green hydrogen” for it does not generate any greenhouse gases throughout its production lifecycle. According to the South Korean government’s hydrogen roadmap, South Korea is aiming to supply 5.26 million tons of hydrogen by 2040, with 30% being accounted for by green hydrogen.

Yongjin Song, Doosan Heavy’s CSO, remarked, “With the South Korean government having recently launched the hydrogen energy portfolio standard(HPS), we expect that the demand for hydrogen will rapidly increase in Korea. We plan to continue with our efforts to expand the green energy business, including hydrogen, wind power and hydropower, and will be leading the efforts to promote the green energy industry.”

Doosan is expediting its efforts to expand the green energy business and recently won green energy projects amounting to over 500 billion won this past month. A notable performance is being achieved in the eco-friendly energy business, as Doosan has been successively winning new projects, such as the 400 billion won contract won in late October to build a hydropower plant in Nepal and the 120 billion won contract won early this month to build Korea’s first hydrogen liquefaction plant.
