The application of the eco-friendly water treatment technology developed by Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (DHIC) will be expanded to industrial complexes in Korea.

DHIC announced on November 19 that it signed an agreement to license the ZLD wastewater treatment technology to water treatment specialist company Synopex. Synopex plans to apply DHIC’s eco-friendly water treatment technology for the outsourced wastewater treatment business for small and medium-sized industrial complexes.

The ZLD technology is the eco-friendly water treatment technology developed by DHIC after four years of R&D beginning 2012. It applies heat to wastewater to evaporate water while concentrating and solidifying contaminants and treating them separately. DHIC has supplied the ZLD system to Yeongdong Thermal Power Plant and Yeongheung Thermal Power Plant, and it plans to expand its supply to coal-fired thermal power plants in Korea and other countries.

“As the demand for eco-friendly technologies is increasing as a result of stricter regulations worldwide, this agreement establishes the foundation for both DHIC and Synopex to grow together. It is particularly significant that it is an opportunity for the ZLD technology developed and applied by DHIC in power plants to be applied to small and medium-sized industrial complexes,” said Park Inwon, Head of DHIC Plant EPC BG.

According to UK-based water research organization GWI (Global Water Intelligence), the market for the ZLD technology used for desulfurization in coal-fired power plants is expected to grow 15 percent annually to USD 800 million by 2026.
