DHIC Wins 1MWh-class Energy Storage System in the US
      2018-04-03
      - Consumers Energy’s first demo project prior to placement of large-scale ESS order
      - DHIC swiftly advancing into the global ESS market, which is forecasted to reach US $8.2 billion by 2024
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (DHIC) said on April 3 that its US affiliate, Doosan GridTech, had won an order from Consumers Energy for an energy storage system that is to be deployed at a power substation in Kalamazoo of Southwestern Michigan. Doosan GridTech will be delivering the ESS as an EPC turnkey project, with the company leveraging its software and system integration capabilities to carry out the entire process from design to supply and installation to ensure delivery by September 2018. The battery of the ESS has a capacity of 1 megawatt, which is enough energy to power 1,000 households for an hour. As Michigan's largest energy provider, Consumers Energy is supplying natural gas and electricity to 6.7 million of the state's 10 million residents. As Consumers Energy’s first ESS order, the project is to be carried out as a demonstration project prior to the company’s order placement for a large-scale ESS later on. “We have demonstrated once again our competitive edge in the ESS field by winning the latest order after supplying ESS to US energy companies, such as Austin Energy and Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) last year. Going forward, we will continue to focus on the North American region, which accounts for the largest share in the global ESS market,” said Daejin Choi, CEO of Doosan GridTech. According to the energy market analysis firm, Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), the global ESS market is expected to more than double in size from US$3.9 billion in 2019 to 8.2 billion in 2024. Last year DHIC had completed its own construction of a power plant that integrates solar power with ESS at its headquarters in Changwon, Korea and Doosan GridTech successfully won a 20 billion-won order from the L.A. Department of Water and Power (LADWP) to supply ESS to a Beacon photovoltaic power station near Mohave Desert, revealing how Doosan is quickly expanding its reach in the ESS business both at home and abroad.
