      Doosan Fuel Cell Develops Hydrogen Fuel Cell Model Using Biogas

      - Customized product offerings using various energy sources…Expecting expanded business opportunities

      Doosan Fuel Cell announced on the 29th that it has jointly developed a hydrogen fuel cell model utilizing biogas in collaboration with Korea Western Power.

      Since 2021, the two companies have worked together to develop this eco-friendly model, which generates electricity using hydrogen fuel cells powered by biogas derived from domestic sewage, livestock manure, and other sources.

      It can operate either by directly injecting biogas into the fuel cell or by blending it with natural gas (NG).
      *Biogas: A gas generated during the decomposition of organic waste (such as sewage, food waste, and livestock manure) in an enclosed environment, consisting of 50%–70% methane (CH4).

      In 2023, the “Biogas Production and Utilization Promotion Act Using Organic Waste Resources” (hereinafter the “Biogas Act”) was enacted, and the Ministry of Environment announced a plan to increase annual biogas production from 360 million N㎥ (based on 2020 data) to 500 million N㎥by 2026. As a result, demand for the newly developed model is expected to grow.

      Doosan Fuel Cell’s flagship product, the phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC), is compatible with a wide range of energy sources, including a hydrogen-based model, a natural gas (NG) model, and a dual-fuel model that uses both liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and NG.

      In addition, Doosan Fuel Cell plans to begin mass production of its new solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) model in the second half of this year.

      A Doosan Fuel Cell official stated, “We are advancing our fuel reforming technology to enable hydrogen fuel cell generation using any energy source capable of hydrogen extraction,” and added, “By offering customized hydrogen fuel cell products through diverse energy sources, we expect to expand our business opportunities going forward.”
