Doosan Enerbility Wins KRW 130bn Fuel Conversion Contract in Saudi Arabia
      2025-04-29
      - Contract signed with Saudi Arabia’s state-owned utility company Marafiq for fuel conversion of Yanbu 2 Power Plant
      - Fuel conversion project expected to lead to a 25% reduction in carbon emissions, while maintaining same generation capacity

Doosan Enerbility announced on April 29th that it had signed a contract valued to be KRW 180 billion with Marafiq, Saudi Arabia’s state-owned utility company, to carry out fuel conversion for the Yanbu 2 Power Plant. The signing ceremony, which was held on April 27th (local time) in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, was attended by key figures from both parties, including Jamal Abdulrahman Omar, Vice President of Operation and Maintenance at Marafiq, and Seungwoo Sohn, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Business Group.

The project will entail converting the existing oil-fired power plant to a gas-fired power plant, with Doosan Enerbility supplying the main equipment, such as the combustor and Distributed Control System, and performing the commissioning process by 2028.  Upon completion of the fuel conversion work, the Yanbu 2 Power Plant will continue to have the same generation capacity, while its carbon emissions will be reduced by close to 25 percent.

The Yanbu 2 is a power plant that was built to have a capacity of 1,375MW in 2013 within the Yanbu industrial Complex, which is located at a distance of approximately 350km to the north of Jeddah. At the time, Doosan Enerbility had supplied the main components, including the boiler and steam turbine.

”The fuel conversion of power plants is garnering much attention these days as an economical, low-carbon energy solution, as it enables the client to make maximum use of the existing facilities, while minimizing the plant downtime,” said Seungwoo Sohn, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Business Group.  “We will do our utmost to meet the project deadline and quality criteria to ensure that our client can provide a stable power supply to the Yanbu Industrial Complex.”

It is forecast that about 1.4GW worth of new orders will be placed yearly for fuel conversion projects in Saudi Arabia throughout the years leading up to 2027. In addition to Saudi Arabia, Doosan has been continuously engaged in such fuel conversion projects in other countries, such as Chile and Vietnam, leading to the company’s growing competitiveness in the global eco-friendly energy market.
