Doosan Corporation has entered the 5G antenna module business in partnership with U.S.-based Movandi.
Doosan Corporation announced on March 3 that it supplied the first batch of 5G antenna modules to Korean wireless repeater manufacturer FRTek. As a core part of the 5G wireless repeater applying Movandi's Beamforming* antenna technology, the integrated solution module has built-in functions such as signal transmission/reception and frequency conversion. It can be applied to the 28 GHz frequency band of all Korean mobile carriers as well as to overseas telecommunication markets such as the United States and Japan.
*Beamforming: A technology that strengthens transmitting and receiving signals in a specific direction by creating an antenna beam in that direction
As a company possessing 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) radio frequency (RF) technology, Movandi demonstrated 5G beamforming antenna technology at Doosan's booth in the CES 2022 held in Las Vegas in January. The technology can drastically improve communication quality by minimizing signal interference between users and transmitting 5G signals in the intended direction.
Doosan Corporation is expanding its business to value-added copper clad laminates (CCL) that can be used in mobile, semiconductor, network, automotive electronics, and 5G/6G communication. Having secured exclusive rights for manufacturing and selling 5G antenna modules, it has been preparing for production by constructing a 5G antenna module line at the Iksan Plant in Jeollabuk Province.
“As data traffic increases worldwide, the need for 5G communication is growing, and the related market is growing rapidly. We have high expectations for the business as 5G communication infrastructure is actively constructed overseas. We intend to continue securing 5G business opportunities starting with the 5G antenna module business,” said Yoo Seung-woo, CEO of Doosan Corporation’s Electronics BG.
Doosan Corporation is developing 26 GHz and 39 GHz antenna modules jointly with Movandi to enter and expand in overseas markets such as China, Europe, and the United States, and it will release them within this year. Moreover, the company is adding R&D personnel and expanding research facilities to accelerate its business. It plans to expand its business domain to IoT terminals for specialized networks and wireless access network radio modules based on mmWave.
