Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (DHIC) is accelerating the digital transformation of all of its businesses.

DHIC announced on October 17 that Woohyong Sohn, Digital Innovation Operation Head at DHIC, had received the DX Leader Award at the 3rd DX (Digital Transformation) Awards. The DX Awards are held by the global market research agency IDC (International Data Corporation) to showcase outstanding examples of digital transformation.

DHIC has developed various digital solutions using IoT and AI, such as PreVision, an early alarm system designed for power plants; Combustion Optimizer, which reduces the generation of environmental-damaging materials while improving power generation efficiency; and a boiler tube management system that enables preventive maintenance by predicting the lifespan of boiler tubes, which are familiarly referred to as the “blood vessels of a power plant”. These solutions have already been applied to power plants in Korea and overseas to improve reliability and efficiency.

DHIC’s Changwon Factory made a saving of more than KRW 3 billion last year by automating the production of large steam turbine buckets, a key item of equipment at power plants, and by introducing such digital innovations as a welding robot at its boiler factory and nuclear factory. DHIC plans to introduce thirty-five types of automation systems and industrial robots by 2022.

In 2017, it introduced a location-based heavy machinery allocation system to check the position and operating status of each machine, thereby eliminating waste and ultimately leading to an annual cost saving of about KRW 1.2 billion. DHIC estimates that it can reduce its costs by about KRW 4.2 billion by adopting an integrated energy control center for all of the HVAC systems, work tools, electricity, and gas at its plants by 2022.

Moreover, it substituted aerial and human measurement with drone measurement at its construction sites in Korea and other countries last year. It also reduced the average work time from two weeks to less than three days and enhanced safety and precision at its construction sites by enabling work in confined spaces or inaccessible areas.

“We must accelerate the process of digital transformation in all our business areas so as to commercialize our digital solutions and increase our competitiveness throughout the value chain,” announced DHIC Chairman Geewon Park.

DHIC and other recipients of the DX Awards Korea will be among the final candidates for the Asia-Pacific DX Awards to be held in Singapore on October 23.
