On December 20, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (Chairman and CEO Geewon Park) announced that it had held the completion ceremony for the Yanbu Phase 2 Expansion MED seawater desalination plant in Jeddah in western Saudi Arabia on December 19, local time.
The Yanbu Phase 2 Expansion MED (Multi-Effect Distillation) seawater desalination plant features the world’s largest MED distiller unit with a production capacity of 15 MIGD(68,190 tons). The MED distiller’s production capacity, which is more than twice the capacity compared to the Fujairah 2 Desalination Plant in the UAE (8.5MIGD), will be sufficient to meet the daily requirements of more than 200,000 people.
Starting the EPC project from June 2011, Doosan succeeded in completing the Yanbu MED plant in 18 months. The fresh water produced by the plant will be supplied to the Medina region.
“Doosan has successfully built the world’s largest MED unit desalination plant with its world-leading technology, which gained recognition of the world once again,” said Keysun Han, President and COO of Doosan, adding, “Based on such prevalent technological competitiveness, Doosan will further consolidate its position as the market leader in the global seawater desalination market.”
Those present at the completion ceremony included HRH Prince Abdualaziz bin Majed bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Governor of Medina; H.E. Abdullah bin Abdul Rahman Al Hussein, the Minister of Water and Electricity; H.E. Dr. Abdulrahman bin Mohammed Al-Ibrahim, SWCC Governor; Keysun Han, President and COO of Doosan; and Seokwon Yun, CEO of the Water Business Group.
Following the ceremony, a contract signing ceremony was held for the Yanbu Phase 3 Seawater Desalination Plant, the contract for which Doosan was notified of being awarded in November 2012.
